Glamorgan Anglers Club Ltd Spring/Summer Newsletter 2026
AGM – Thursday 21st May 2026. 7pm start in the Taff Suite at the National Sports Centre for Wales, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
As we move into Spring it’s always an exciting time for Anglers, as we look forward to another warm weather spell and lighter mornings and evenings. As usual our Bailiff Team have been working on waters where needed and making sure that they are kept clean and tidy. Our river Anglers who have joined as full members will enjoy the still waters until the “Glorious 16th of June” when the rivers re-open to coarse anglers. Unfortunately over the late autumn and winter we have seen some heavy rainfall and constant high river levels which have impeded getting onto the rivers, but lets hope the levels will be good for the coming season. The River Taff has had a huge number of coarse fish stocked over the past few years from below Radyr weir all the way to Gabalfa. 4” to 8” Barbel and Chub have been stocked along our stretches in the Thousands and well over 100,000 Roach and a few thousand Bream have been stocked, with the Bream introduced above Llandaff weir. The River Ely has also had a considerable stock of Barbel, Chub and Roach from St Georges down to St Fagans rail crossing. It would be very helpful if members who fish these stretches let us know your catches, you don’t have to say exactly where, just a general location.
Good Barbel and chub fishing on our stretch of the Wye and during the Autumn and winter some good Pike have been landed. We have had no reports from the river Trothy at Mitchel Troy.
Our still waters have fished reasonably well and have provided some good sport throughout the autumn and winter.
Llantrythid Lake has had a good stocking of Tench, Crucians and Bream and should produce some good bags as the weather warms. Some good bags on feeder tactics and a few decent size carp have been landed.
Treoes Pond as usual has fished well during the colder months with some good bags of silvers and during the winter months some excellent Pike Fishing. Carp have been regularly caught with some good double figure fish to the Carp anglers. There are plans to monitor and assess the Pike population in Treoes and depending on the findings, the committee will take an appropriate course of action.
Barry Ponds as ever is popular with our members and has given good sport when the water warmed slightly. Sues Pond has a good head of large carp, along with some specimen size Bream. Carols Pond has a more mixed species with Barbel, carp, bream, Roach, rudd and tench to target. Please Note surface fishing is not permitted on these waters. If you park at Dow car park to access Carols pond, please ensure you leave the car park by 7pm as Dow lock the access gates and your car will be locked in, so if you want to fish late, please park in Sues pond car park which does not have the 7pm restriction.
Pyscodlyn Mawr Pond has been a little quiet over the colder months, but as the temperatures increased over the past weeks, sport has started to pick up and some decent size Carp and Tench have been landed. Grass carp have also started showing which is a sign that spring is definitely here at last.
St Y Nyll top pond has mainly been a Pike venue through the winter, but as the temperatures increased the Tench have woken up, with some good bags reported. Please be aware that the Pond closes on 31st March and will re-open 1st June, when Tench will be the main target species that members will try hard to catch. New members please note that the bottom pond is out of bounds to Fishing and there are no Carp in the top pond. You must not access the trackway to the ponds before 7am and you must be off the water by one hour after sunset. Please be quiet when going through the gate next to the house, especially in the mornings & late evenings.
Seven Oaks is mainly a Carp venue and can provide good sport on medium size fish. We have been advised that there are some decent size roach in the ponds but reports are few and far between. There is a Closed sign on the gate but your club key will give you access to the gate and please ensure that you use the car park and no vehicle access beyond the gate in front of the bungalow.
Groes Faen Pond will be open again to members from 1st April and our head bailiff and some of his team have repaired the pegs and walkway across the bridge. Thanks to the club members who turned out on the recent work party to clear the paths and walkways. If when on this water you are confronted by the farmer, please just be polite and ignore him. If he does get confrontational, call the head bailiff and report the incident. Please also ensure you close all the gates entering or leaving the venue.
Cardiff Bay does offer some excellent fishing for those who give the venue time and effort. It’s a case of finding the fish, but once you find them, results can be exceptional.
As always the Club has been investigating the possibility of acquiring either a lease or purchase on new waters. Earlier in the year we investigated a new stretch of the Wye, but unfortunately it was not a stretch that we could get more than a few members on due to most of the stretch being very shallow and fast water.
Roath Park is still ongoing and we are just waiting for Cardiff Council to agree the final version of a lease, which although imminent, does seem to take forever to complete. We will advise as soon as we have an update.
We have also been looking at a couple of other possible venues and we hope that we may be in a position to make an announcement at the AGM. If any member knows of or hears about a possible venue, please let us know and we will investigate it.
Chairmans Report – Richard Turner
For those of you who fished through the Winter rains, I hope you were rewarded with some great catches. It looks as though Spring may finally have sprung, hopefully providing more excellent tench and general Stillwater fishing. A quick thank you to all members who have renewed their membership and a “Welcome” to all new members! Club membership has exceeded 1,100 for the 3rd year in succession, testament to the quality of fishing experienced on our waters and hopefully to the work done by the committee, bailiffs and other volunteers who work to ensure that our waters are maintained and stocked to ensure we maintain our standards. I am delighted to confirm that we have finally been able to re-establish access to Bishop’s (Groesfaen) pond and thanks to the amazing work of Brian and Keith in particular, the venue is now fishable, albeit with the need for some weed and lily removal. I’d also like to thank our two new Monmouth bailiffs, Matt and Marty for their incredible work in establishing a path virtually along the whole length of our stretch at Hadnock Road. The intention is to establish more swims in this increasingly popular area during the close season. As always, member’s help will be welcome in the coming weeks with work parties to be advertised via Clubmate. We are constantly on the lookout for new opportunities, so keep your eyes out for announcements in the coming weeks! Finally, best wishes to all for your Spring tench (or whatever takes your fancy) fishing and thanks for supporting Wales’ best angling club!
Secretaries Report – Adrian Corrigan
Firstly I would like to welcome all new members that have joined Glamorgan anglers this season and members who have re-joined, you are very welcome. I urge all members new and old to please read the club rules and follow them, GAC have a dedicated bailiff team headed By Brian Dickman who does an amazing job for the Club. You will be stopped at some point and asked to produce your club license and have your fishing equipment checked which may include being asked to reel in your rods so the bailiff can check your end rig and hook sizes, Please be patient with the club bailiffs they are only doing their job for the club. The NRW work at Pysgodlyn Mawr has been completed and that area of the pond should now return to normal given time. The NRW have now given GAC permission to remove the excessive growth of water lilies from the pond this will be done later in the season by a specialized contractor. The same contractor has again this year been removing reeds from the swims at both the Barry ponds. The Otter fence at Llantrittyd has been a big success with no evidence of otter activity on the banks. The pond has had a further stocking of 100 1lb+ Tench and 1500 Crucian carp. A big thank you from all of us to Richard Turner GAC chairman for negotiating access to Groes Faen Pond as we have not had access for a few years we are unsure of the current level of fish stock in the pond, thank you to all the members who turned up for the work party at bishops it is greatly appreciated by the club. Work has now been done on the paths and pegs at bishops and it will reopen to members on the 1st of April, however there is still an issue with a farmer who owns the adjacent land if any member is approached by this man please try to not respond to him and report it to the head bailiff asap. Finaly from me the GAC AGM will be held at the National Sports Centre, Sophia Gardens on 21/05/26 at 19.00 if you have any question or points to raise at the AGM you can email myself at secretary@glamorgananglersclub.co.uk Tight lines to you all.
Treasurers Report – Mike Bishop
Thank you to all members for renewing your memberships or starting a new membership. This obviously helps the Club achieve financial stability and enables us to look closely at adding to our waters, wherever possible by purchasing new waters. The activity of purchasing new waters has been extremely frustrating for the last few years with several very promising leads and negotiations that ultimate did not come to fruition. But, fingers crossed for announcements in the coming months. The Club is just in the process of finalising a new website and we welcome committee member Gavin Bishop (no relation to me!) as our new Website coordinator. A web search of Glamorgan Anglers should show the initial new website which is glamorgananglersclub.co.uk and glamorgananglersclub.org.uk We would welcome your feedback as to what you would like to see in the website but bear in mind at the moment we are still making adjustments and hope eventually to include drone footage of our waters. As ever, the highlight of the coming AGM will be the Treasurers Report (well, I think so!!).
Junior Angling – Matt Clarke
We are delighted to welcome all junior anglers, both new and returning, to get involved in our upcoming programme of fishing competitions and events. Bringing young anglers into the club and supporting their enjoyment and development in the sport continues to be a real focus for us. Over the coming months, we have a range of sessions planned, including competitions, different fishing methods sessions, and some exciting new activities. These events are designed to be fun, relaxed, and suitable for all abilities, whether you are picking up a rod for the first time or looking to improve your skills. All event dates and further details can be found on the club website. If you would like more information or would like to take part, please contact the Matt Clarke, the Junior Secretary via the email address listed on the website or by phone on 07794 532111. Our first event will be held at Treoes Pond this Saturday(28/03/26). The peg draw will take place at 12:00 noon, with fishing from 1:00pm through to 4:00pm. We look forward to seeing plenty of juniors there and getting the season off to a great start.
Membership Secretary – Paul Addecott
Firstly, many thanks to everyone who has either renewed or are new members for supporting our club. I appreciate that Clubmate is not easy for many of you to use, but for the club overall, it has helped the club immensely in issuing over 1100 membership cards every year, which is unachievable if it was done manually.
We are working with Clubmate and it is envisaged that from next years renewals there may be the opportunity to move to off line digital memberships, for which the trials are in progress. It will mean that members would need to install a new app on their phones, but we do know that not everyone is tech savvy, so we will look at giving an option to continue receiving a physical card when renewing. At the time of writing this update, the Night Fishing Group is full and there is a waiting list. If you wish to be added to the waiting list, please use the Clubmate Comms to apply. Please note that Full memberships for renewals & new memberships is now closed for the year ended 31/3/27 Season. Only Junior Full memberships together with River Taff, Ely & Cardiff Bay only memberships will remain open. Finally, please, please, please only contact me either by phone, email or Clubmate comms, I will no longer answer WhatsApp or Text messages and I do not monitor Facebook. Could I please ask that if you do call me, do not call before 6pm.
Head Bailiff Report – Brian Dickman
As always I would firstly like to take this opportunity to thank the Bailiffs on my team for their ongoing support. My team are out and about in all weathers checking our waters and ensuring that its only club members that are fishing our waters. Thanks to the team who look after our Wye stretch and keep access to the pegs clear. We now have a lady who has just joined the team, so welcome to Rhian, I am sure you will see her around the waters. I have spent a few days at Groes Faen ensuring the pegs are safe to use and have repaired the walkway on the bridge. As you can imagine, the platforms have been unused for a few years so were in a grim state. We have had a few issues at Barry ponds of late with a group of youngsters climbing the fence and poaching the ponds and leaving a mess on the pegs they use. If you see them turning up, usually in the evening either call me immediately and I will get some of my team to turn up and deal with them or if you are not on your own and are happy to do so, see them off then pond. Also with Barry ponds could you please ensure that you shut and lock the gates behind you whenever entering or leaving the site. I have added the current club rules below to this newsletter, would you please read them before your next fishing trip, as it is important that everyone abides by them when on our waters. Note that members (with the exception of Night fishing Group members) are only allowed on our water one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset (see 3x below). The exception to this is St y Nyll where you must not pass through the gates by the house before 7am and you must leave before 1 hour after sunset (see 11c below). Note the wording, you cannot be on the water before Sunrise and must have left by Sunset. These timings will be strictly applied! To find the exact times of Sunrise and Sunset, these are usually contained in the Daily Newspapers or for Cardiff they can be seen at https://dateandtime.info/citysunrisesunset.php?id=2653822
